The first snow of the season

It had been Karmen's plan for over a month to come visit me the first weekend of December.  We were both looking forward to our "sisters weekend" very much.  The week before, however, we got word that Winter Weather was predicted for the weekend.  Snow and ice would pile up, and among other things, roads would be impassable.  I took the prediction with a grain of salt.  They're not always right about these things, you know.  In addition, people's perceptions of Winter Weather is not always the same.  So, we decided to wait and see.  On Thursday night, it started sleeting.  When we woke up on Friday morning, the ground was covered with snow, and it was coming down "fast and furious."  Also, presumably under the snow was a layer of ice.  The home where we planned to have Karmen come that night to meet up with us was out in the country from Shoals, Indiana.  Now, if you've never been down this way, that might not mean anything to you.  What it means is that she would need to drive on unfamiliar roads that twist and wind for miles and be on the lookout for not-so-evident street signs, all in the dark and in bad weather.  The realization of our weekend plans did not look hopeful, and I was bummed.  However, after I talked to the IN DOT on Friday noon and received the report that the roads were in poor condition and that I should stay home if at all possible, Karmen made the decision to go ahead and come.  "Of course that's what they're going to say.  They're not going to encourage people to get out on the roads when they're the ones responsible for taking care of the whole mess."  (Not her words exactly but the general idea)  Since she was game to make the trip, I decided that the least I could do on my end was to make her journey a little shorter and less complicated.  I hitched a ride with a friend going more or less in the direction I wanted to go, and we traveled to Mitchell on roads that looked like this:

We made it safely.  She made it safely.
The weekend was wonderful.
