Remembering

Seventy-one years ago today, Pearl Harbor was attacked.  Here are a few facts about what happened on December 7, 1941.

  • The attack by the Japanese lasted 110 minutes, from 7:45 am to 9:55 am.
  • A total of 2355 US servicemen were killed and 1143 were wounded.  68 civilians were killed and 35 wounded.
  • There were eight battleships in Pearl Harbor that day.  All were either sunk or damaged during the attack.  All but two were eventually able to return to active duty.

On December 8, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared 12-7-41 "a date that will live in infamy."  That very day, the United States declared war on Japan and officially entered World War II.  "Remember Pearl Harbor!" became a rallying cry for the US during the war.

Indeed, an event to remember. Especially as the veterans from that era are almost all gone. The sacrifice of both the survivors and those killed in action should never be forgotten.
