A few months ago, I had learned that I might have some time to myself during the month of December. Soon after that I received an e-mail from Alaina Taplin, a friend of mine from Illinois. When I replied, I mentioned that I would have some time alone in December, and maybe she would be interested in coming to visit me at that time. She took me up on it! And recruited another friend to come along with her! So, on the night of Dec. 14, I headed to the airport again to meet Laura and Alaina's flight in to Quito.
