Blowing off some steam

You thought that's what I was doing in the last entry, didn't you?!  Turns out, I can't compete with Cotopaxi...

Taken from the airport on Saturday morning

Cotopaxi is an active composite volcano.  (That means that it is conical and built up of many layers of hardened lava, tephra, pumice and volcanic ash.  It's the same kind as Mount St. Helen's just for reference.)  It's part of the Andes Mountain range and is located 31 miles south of Quito.  It is the second highest summit in the country (19,347 ft.).  It is one of the world's highest volcanoes and until recently had most recently erupted in 1877.

The Geophysics Institute of Quito's Polytechnic School placed Cotopaxi under active watch on June 25, 2015 after observing activity.  It began erupting on Aug. 15, 2015.

(Thanks to Wikipedia for the above information.)

Here's an link with some interesting recent pictures of Cotopaxi.
